MXTech Lucky System – fork cartridge system
CP Rider Tom Cichon tests the MXTech Lucky System in place of the KTM 4CS.
MikeS from Cycle Playground has a long relationship with MXTech’s – Jeremy Wilkey. MXTech has been a leader in suspension tuning and innovative product design. Jer has talked for years to come up with a cost effective system for front forks. Many companies have kits for forks but cost has been a factor. MXTech’s approach was to build a system, the MXTech Lucky system, that was cost effective and maintain a high level of technology as well as consistency.
Suspension tuning by MikeS at Cycle Playground is geared towards maintenance for racers and riders that need a few tweeks or fine tuning of their system. We do provide full on valving needs for out TM motorcycles and other models. Over the years we have tackled the KTM 4CS forks, like others it can get pricey or a hit or miss per riders expectations.
Fast forward to out Cycle Playground Team rider Tom Cichon. Tom has a TM 450MX and a KTM 350 SXF. We have worked with Tom for years on the KTM from PDS and their forks since 2000 when I purchased his personal 99 KTM300MXC.
Tom has had the 4CS fork out to the mid west tuners and then last year with us to fine tune. We got them almost perfect but at the expense of a spring/oil combo that changed venue to venue. Tom rode some new air forks and others and said they seemed ok but like many riders , budgets are sometimes a big factor.
We decided to pull the trigger on the MXTech Lucky System. These kits can be self installed by most but we opted to do it in house with a complete fork set up package and to docuement settings for any future updates or tuning needs. The install was easy, straight forward, set preload. The bleeding was a bit tricky at first but was really simple once you “read” the install sheet twice. The kit came with proper springs and settings for our riders needs. Jer was up front and honest saying these kits are not for every rider. CP owner Mike Soudas would probably push the limits at a AA pace. A local MX Expert may needs some tweeks, on the flip side, some old and slow guys may require small adjustments to set up. We at the CP did the research and had a plan.
The feedback, Tom did a pre ride at his house track in rural Pennsylvania before his trip to South Carolina for a National Enduro. The out of the box and seat of the pants feel through the first couple sections was good. He made a few clicker adjustments to compare, then lost his allen wrench near the end of the event before making a final tune.
The verdict was a two thumbs up, best money spent on a set a forks in long time. Very plush, compliant to trail trash, sucks up the big ones. Tom has a small list of tweeks that we will report back on shortly.
We plan on having a setup commissioned to fit the TM 50mm zookes used a few years back. MXTech has cartridge systems for many model current forks including the AER, Explorer, SSS, TAC, SSF, TC and more. Check them out at MXTECH Here
